Here’s the thing: broadcast-quality is not some mystical standard reserved for major-label artists with seven-figure budgets. It’s a set of technical specifications. Specific, learnable, achievable ones. And once you know what they are, you can find out exactly where your track stands. Yeah!
It Starts With the Mix
Broadcast quality begins with a professional mix, and a professional mix is not about expensive gear. It’s about decisions.
Every element in your track has to be balanced so the listener can hear what they’re supposed to hear, when they’re supposed to hear it. The vocals sit clearly in the mix without fighting the instruments. The low end is controlled and doesn’t muddy the picture. The stereo image is intentional, not too wide, not collapsed to mono.
When a track is mixed well, it translates. Laptop speakers, earbuds, a cinema sound system, and a television. It sounds good everywhere because the decisions that went into it were deliberate, not accidental.
When it isn’t mixed well, when the vocals are buried, the low end is boomy, the whole thing falls apart on small speakers, that’s what gets flagged as “not broadcast quality.” Not the song. The mix.

Loudness Standards
This is the most specific and most misunderstood part of broadcast quality, in our opinion.
Different platforms have different loudness standards, measured in LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale). Without getting too technical, LUFS is a standardized way of measuring perceived loudness rather than just peak volume.
Here’s what matters for independent artists:
Certain streaming platforms normalize playback to a target level. If your master is too loud, it’s automatically turned down, not gracefully. Certain frequencies get affected in ways that make the track sound worse, not just quieter. Too quiet, and your track sounds thin and unprofessional next to everything around it.
For broadcast, specifically television, film, and advertising, the standards are different again. Submitting a streaming master to a broadcast placement without knowing this is a common mistake.

File Specifications
Broadcast quality also means delivering the right file in the right format.
For almost every professional submission, sync libraries, publishers, TV and film placements, and advertising agencies, the requirements of the file format, sample rate, bit depth, and true peak are important.
Why is this important?
The audio gets processed multiple times on its way from your session to the final destination: broadcast encoding, streaming normalization, and video compression. Files that don’t meet the starting specifications degrade with every step. Make sense?
Stereo and Mono Compatibility
This one surprises many artists.
In broadcast contexts, especially television, audio is often played in mono. Some speakers in commercial environments (restaurants, retail spaces, airports) are mono. If your mix has hard-panned elements that disappear when collapsed to mono, or if your low end has phase issues that cancel out in mono, your track has a problem that a professional mix would have caught.
Checking your mix in mono before you submit anywhere is a thirty-second task. It should be non-negotiable.
